Penny Max was purchased by Emma Lavelle at the Brightwells Cheltenham NH April of this year for 45,000 Guineas as a really exciting chasing prospect. He is a four year old gelding who has had one career start finishing second, beaten a neck, in a highly competitive point to point at Punchestown in February. He jumps like a stag but is a horse who would benefit significantly from being given more time to develop and mature. He is by top national hunt sire Flemensfirth, whose progeny include this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Imperial Commander as well as the 2008 Arkle winner Tidal Bay, to name a few.
By the end of August, Penny Max looked in great shape and was just doing easy canters so Emma will begin to step up his exercise from the beginning of September. Emma's plan is to run him in a bumper in October and then to go novice hurdling with him. This horse will continue to strengthen and fill to his frame but still looks rather raw when you compare him to some of those other fully mature horses out at exercise. He is a forward going horse with a good temperament, and will probably need soft ground to be seen to best effect.
