In his long career as an owner and breeder there is no doubt that Blue Peter was Lord Rosebery’s best horse. Indeed it is fair to assume that he was superior to any of the 5th Earls’ three Derby winners. As a three year old in 1939 he won all of his four races including the 2000 guineas and Eclipse, as well as the Derby. Sadly the War led to the St Leger and his expected clash with the French champion Pharis II being cancelled. Unlike Pharis, who became a great stallion, Blue Peter was only moderately successful.
